I am Japanese and live here with my wife about 100 km away from Tokyo Japan.

In Virginia, where I used to live, every 16 years the cicadas appear in large numbers. I got to see it as a child. It was LOUD! When you went outside, flying cicadas would land on you. I remember that a neighber filled an entire bucket with those shells.
