This is today's the Sakaki. It's growing.
There are a lot of Scale insect on the branches.
It's called Kaigara Mushi (カイガラムシ) in Japanese.
I am Japanese and live here with my wife about 100 km away from Tokyo Japan. I would like to write off nothing out of ordinary at our house in English with some Japanese. As a matter of cause, I will attache some pictures with my words. 連合いと二人で生活している爺でござる。日常のたわいもない出来事と生活を写真と共に残したいと考えている。

Your yard looks full of fun projects!
Found your blog while checking on the Clueless Gardeners! Such fun. will look at more when I have time to browse. Saw your picture of Pokeweed, which reminded me of a project we did here this summer where we removed many, many Pokeweed. My 7-7 post "If you ask they will come" shows many pictures of plant and root masses!! They are no fun once they get established in a garden. Regards from New England.
